Irrational Games – Bioshock Pitch Document!

Bioshock_logo

Here’s a recent classic this time — the pitch document for Irrational Games’ 2007 blockbuster hit Bioshock!

BioShock is the “genetically enhanced” first person shooter that lets you do things never before possible in the genre: turn everything into a weapon, biologically mod your body with plasmids, hack devices and systems, upgrade your weapons and craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques. You are a cast-away in Rapture, an underwater Utopia torn apart by civil war. Caught between powerful forces, and hunted down by genetically modified “splicers” and deadly security systems, you have to come to grips with a deadly, mysterious world filled with powerful technology and fascinating characters. No encounter ever plays out the same, and no two gamers will play the game the same way.

it’s a good thing they did this, it helps designers and people learning Game Design how to come up with different pitches.

I think the top description should be changed. Bioshock has nothing inside it that System Shock 2 (made by almost the same people over ten years previous) already did. Even down to EXACTLY the same things being able to be hacked, plasmids are psyonics, adam is cyborg points, you see ghosts at lots of turns aswell as being able to find recordings of the crew everywhere. No, bioshock is far from unique when the desighners simply went “I KNOW! we’ll do what everyone is doing atm! take cyberpunk, and turn it into steam punk! yeah that works!”.And if people argue, then im sorry then i have 1 bigger example than those. In bioshock you are working under ATLAS, who later turns out to be the badguy, FONTAINE. System Shock 2, you are working for PALTO, who turns out to be the atagonist from the first game, SHODAN. Not good enough? The character you play has no memory of who he is or why he is there, being guided only by SHODAN barking orders just like fontaine….Its a shame that so many people have forgotten system shock 2, yet rant and rave over bioshock being so UNQIUE AND AMAZING. Its what most people do nowadays, its CYBERPUNK, converted to STEAMPUNK.Do not however get me wrong, i did enjoy bioshock and thought it was a very fun game to play, but it annoys me how old games and the like get forgotten so easily, then a BRAND NEW SHINEY THING comes out that is pretty much the same game but somehow, UNIQUIE, and ABLE TODO THINGS NEVER DONE NOR SEEN BEFORE!

Crash, that description is a direct copy-paste from their own product description, the same as every other doc on the site. I’m not editorializing.
